Tess: Thank you can never be enough…

Since arriving in Goma we have met some amazing people who have helped us immensely and we will always be grateful for all the help they have given us.

Farni and Francois from the South African Air force, who provided us with much entertainment on our nights out, and a special thanks to ‘Floppy’ and Andre for provoking the testosterone around the table one night at the Ihusi, managing to raise us $600!

Even though we only new him for a short time, John, from the SA Army who paid frequent visits to us from across the road at Bungwe, who donated a well needed electric cooker and LOADS of gas canisters for a gas cooker, essential for those periods without electricity! We miss the bike and the helmet John….!

And our Petite. How could we survive without Anne-Laure, our gorgeous girl who has been and continues to be our voice in a world where we can’t communicate! Coming to a country where we don’t speak the language and having 7 staff who don’t speak English, was more than daunting for both of us. And an unexpected delay from Liz’s illness in SA, preventing her from returning only added to our reservations. Anne-Laure has been there every step of the way, helping with problems with staff, neighbours, finance, everything we need to know in a country we live in but haven’t had the time to learn or the language to learn it with! Our struggle would have been unimaginable without your support, thank you for everything you have done and everything you will continue to help us with.

And our stars who we simply could not do without! Martin and Braam. We met Martin, (the top honcho for Celtel in the DRC) a few days after meeting Braam (from the SA army) after they met at the infamous Ihusi, frequented regularly by the SA visitors to Goma! Ever since we met they have helped us tremendously in every way they’ve been able to. Our house is now fit for a king! What with having a kettle, a working fridge, a homemade braai, fencing for the kids, a voltage regulator, proper glass glasses for beer (!), a huge metal drum for the kids to play in, the best material in the WORLD for our front room, only a few things to mention that they have helped us with. All luxuries we never thought possible! Not to mention the absurd financial donations, all of which we could not have done without but still need to donner you for!!! Our weekends at Coco Jambo’s would not be the same without our SA guys, (Nicole would miss the nudges from our ever so calm and relaxed Martin and the ‘in die arms van my moeder’ song is never the same without Braam up there on the dancefloor!) It seems like we’re in Europe with all the things we have here- a car when we need it, internet which does not take an hour to open one email! And of course the company is pretty darn good too! I’m afraid you have both been exiled from South Africa as of today. You can never go home so will have to stay with us in Goma forever!
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done.
Thank you thank you thank you (for ever and ever and ever!)
