Tess: Plans at last…

Last week was pretty eventful and successful, we had George from JGI Kenya and Debbie from JGI Uganda with us. After a meeting with our staff most of the trouble JGI have had with their contracts will at long last be over (nearly!) Debbie told us the plans for the near future- if all goes well we’ll be moving the chimps from Goma to Lwiro (near Bukavu) in January. We’ve only seen pictures of Lwiro so far, we haven’t had a chance to go down. The grounds seem pretty good, lots of old Belgian style buildings, and there’s a forest at the back we can turn into a chimp enclosure. Hopefully by January there’ll be space for these guys to go to, and then the bigger enclosures for the chimps and monkeys can begin! We need to make the most of Coco Jambos in the next month as there’ll be not much dancing in the sticks in Lwiro! There’s a big library there which sounds good, but I’m sure all the literature is in French though!
I think we’ll be most worried about the two male chimps when we first move down, as the caregivers won’t becoming with. Shege will hopefully be old enough not be as attached now, the other two girls, Kanabiro and Yongesa look to me and Nicole for comfort now, but it’s just Etaito and Gari, who seem to be the most attached to the caregivers, so our brave boys might be the most scared when we move! But they’re tough enough so they’ll be fine once they’re settled!
