5:30

are you guys ok?! just heard on the news that the volcano erupted...-aeh!??? No no everything is fine as far as I know but I’ll check with Tess! >Tessa! Liz told me the volcano erupted… haha very funny this would be something on top of it wouldn’t it!?< > Well, actually Damien told me last night that one (?!) of the volcanoes erupted indeed…< > aeh- one of the?! I didn’t know there are more than one…< > yes apparently there are more than 6< >but anyway… why didn’t you tell me?!!!!<
>Ach, I didn’t want to wake you up ‘coz you’re not feeling well and it wasn’t serious anyway- it happened in an area where no one is living!<
Ach so, ja dann!

Tess: Where’s Noah and his arc?…..

Rainy season started a while back. But rainy season for us really started last week. At home on a quiet Tuesday night, the rain started to fall. Nothing unusual we thought. Everything was as normal as I lay down on the sofa for maybe 1 minute. I stood up to discover the front from under 2 inches of water! It appears our drainage system is not up to much! After a panic of seeing the front room, kitchen and caregiver’s room more like a paddling pool than anything else, we set about trying to minimize the damage. Moving rocks, digging gutters and sweeping water were the activities for the next few hours. Finally the rain slowed down and the ineffective drains were able to take the strain. As morning came, we had a physical day of digging all the silt that rain brought in from the road. After clearing the house of water, it seemed the water was not at an end. The plumber came to fix the tap in the kitchen, he removed the tap but was unable to find where to turn the water off, so the kitchen was under water for a second time within the space of 12 hours!
It seems every house around is safe from the rain, the road is clear apart from the 2 metre river that has formed directly in the path of our property! A little unlucky for us! The heavy rains have also destroyed one of the perimeter walls of the property, and with another heavy rainfall last night, after more digging silt, pulling up concrete and clearing water, we discovered the rains have destroyed another part of the wall. Hopefully the heavens will give us a break for a day or two to get the wall fixed!

As well as the house being a water world for a few days, it has also become a dying place and mass graveyard for all the crickets around! Those that do not get caught by our staff, (who now spend the majority of the day and night climbing on the roof catching crickets to take home and eat) seem to find a safe haven from the cooking pot in our house, where they proceed to lie all over the house – in every nook and cranny (including the fridge) wriggle around for a few hours and then cark it, giving us a daily job of rounding up all the cricket carcasses! I’m waiting for the day they all return from the dead and we have an infestation of zombie crickets…..

What? First of all it’s our decision not Debbies and second I’m not going to leave them here! und bitte, beruhige dich doch, ich versteh ja kein Wort! Jaja (hechel) pack schon mal alles, ihr habt 30 Minuten... ok Rita I’ll speak to you just now now!<
Na also!

Wasserhahn rekordverdaechtige 2 Tage funktioniert,

Tess: Halloween comes early…

Here’s a story I forgot to mention… One night, back in August, oblivious to us as we were dancing the night away, the Congolese people of Goma began to become a little worried. After talking to some of our staff and the driver of JGI the following day, it turned out there were some strange noises in the sky, which could be heard by all in Goma from one end to the other…. After speaking to some more people, it turned out there were vampires and witches roaming Goma during the dark hours…. After speaking to some (slightly more rational) French people, we found out where these ghouls appeared from. A lady began to panic, running down the streets of Goma, arms stretched out, claiming vampires had taken her blood. To keep the bad spirits away, the locals began to light fires on the streets, burning tyres and anything else they could find. And these actions sparked the rest of Goma into a mad panic – the volcano had erupted! So the whole of Goma was in an uproar, trying to keep the bad spirits at bay and escaping from the exploding volcano, unawares to the likes of us! Makes life a little more exciting than usual!

Poseidons Zorn

(thank you Braam!!! we would be still the digging idiots of today without your help!)

Waehrend wir so vor uns hin geniessen... 20:10:05 >Tess where is this water coming from? Let me just get a duster!<> well then enjoy swimming, hope you are having a boat on stand by <> no man this is fucking serious!<>shit i set the couch on fire!<
SIE: >hey good for you but I really don’t need to share your sexual games!<

Tess: Plans at last…

Last week was pretty eventful and successful, we had George from JGI Kenya and Debbie from JGI Uganda with us. After a meeting with our staff most of the trouble JGI have had with their contracts will at long last be over (nearly!) Debbie told us the plans for the near future- if all goes well we’ll be moving the chimps from Goma to Lwiro (near Bukavu) in January. We’ve only seen pictures of Lwiro so far, we haven’t had a chance to go down. The grounds seem pretty good, lots of old Belgian style buildings, and there’s a forest at the back we can turn into a chimp enclosure. Hopefully by January there’ll be space for these guys to go to, and then the bigger enclosures for the chimps and monkeys can begin! We need to make the most of Coco Jambos in the next month as there’ll be not much dancing in the sticks in Lwiro! There’s a big library there which sounds good, but I’m sure all the literature is in French though!
I think we’ll be most worried about the two male chimps when we first move down, as the caregivers won’t becoming with. Shege will hopefully be old enough not be as attached now, the other two girls, Kanabiro and Yongesa look to me and Nicole for comfort now, but it’s just Etaito and Gari, who seem to be the most attached to the caregivers, so our brave boys might be the most scared when we move! But they’re tough enough so they’ll be fine once they’re settled!

Tess: Time for a lock down….

So we are eating out of tins and eating sweaty warm cheese and our beloved fridge is broken! After the luxury of having ice, milk and butter, the fridge decided to die. The guy came to fix it… then it broke…. Then he fixed it…. Then it broke. After the guy coming several more times and gassing out the house twice it still wasn’t fixed! We’re hoping for one last try, but he can’t come at the moment as the electricity is very poor at the moment. Whether it is to do with the elections or not, we’re not sure. But a lot of Goma only has power for a few hours a day. Our biggest problem is not being able to have a brew in the morning!

For the past two weeks, we have been attempting to prepare for any trouble there may have been with the election results. Some people are evacuating the country to Rwanda, but most of the NGO’s have curfews for the period of the election, and lock downs for the day of elections. We have no orders, so just our common sense! The official date for the announcement was 19th Nov, but we were told the results would be released before then. We bought for ourselves food that would keep, in case we couldn’t go out. It didn’t seem to work too well, as soon as we bought it we ate it! The pantry is overflowing with potatoes, courge and Avocado, a precaution for the chimps food, in case we couldn’t buy anything. The results came out on 15th Nov, and as yet no trouble in Goma. Kabila, the previous president has won, which is good news for Goma as this area supports him. The bulk of the trouble will be in Kinsasha, the Capital, where the population supports Bemba, the losing candidate.

Braam has been working in Kinsasha for a while now, so we were a little worried about him being there. Weeks before the election results there was some trouble, so it was hard to imagine what trouble there would be when the results are aired. After some cryptic and confusing text messages from Braam asking us if we had an coffee left in the house, we opened the door to find him standing there! A very nice surprise and welcome relief to have him back in Goma. Time for a celebration of course! And it a Wednesday….. So thankfully he is safe in Goma with us and out of the craziness in Kinsasha.
On the day that Braam surprised us, the second he arrived I had to leave to go to the bank with Anne-Laure in Rwanda. Sitting down at the desk in the bank, me being 23 years old and Anne-Laure being 28, the man behind the desk asked Anne-Laure the insulting question of ‘Is this your daughter?’ I know I look young but surely not that young! After realising I spoke English, he decided to keep digging and insult me – ‘You’re very simple aren’t you?’ was the first thing he said to me! After Anne-Laure’s translation of the meaning of simple, he became very embarrassed and told me he meant ‘quiet’. He was pretty quiet for the reminder of the time we were there!!

Tess: The underworld of Goma…..

After our long weeks of doing Bonane’s shifts, it seemed to be time for a party week! Getting the taste for vodka and tonic we had a tough weekend with the dj’s from coco jambo’s! After a weekend of no sleep and staying out till the birds were singing and the sun was up, we thought the week ahead would be relaxing and quiet. But as Wednesday arrived we had some bad news… After Liz’s break of a month in South Africa extending to 3 months due to her illness, we discovered she is unable to return to us! Feeling a little bit down we decided the only way to raise our spirits was a trip to coco jambo’s for some vodka and shakira! After a mad rush of Russian roulette with shots of vodka, gin and aftershock, we headed down to our local place to join the dj’s. As the night closed in, a suggestion was made to go to the infamous Sun City, a Congolese hang out, passed frequently but never entered by the crazy chimp girls. With protection from security guards from Coco’s (plus half the bar staff from every joint around) we made our way to Sun city. A little intimated when we arrived, we attached ourselves to the chairs and decided we’d be better off not dancing…. Till Shakira blasted out from the speakers! Then there was no stopping us! Thinking logically, we thought it best to stay till daylight, just to make sure it was safe for us to go home…. Not because we wanted to party and drink, and drink and party….
Thursday was a day to recover, before heading out to Coco’s again! The weekend was reasonably civilized, bar Friday night! During our crazy weekend we met some folks from an Irish NGO called GOAL, who introduced us to lots of other NGO staff, many who were English! Up until now I’d only met one English guy, the rest being French and South African. Made a change to meet some more NGO staff, as opposed to all the SA army! And we had our first introduction with someone who doesn’t work with people! We met a guy, who works for WWF – so we’re not the only people in Goma working for animals! Sunday was a relaxing day, round at the GOAL residence for a swim in the lake and mastering the art of the pirogues. The guys didn’t have much luck, sinking as soon as they touched the water, but the girls were pretty impressive!

Other things have happened here besides the consumption of large quantities of vodka- honest! After trials and tribulations of deciding the best time for Bonane to return to work – he was adamant to return the day after his cast was off- we were a little bit reserved as his arm would need some exercise. We came to an agreement that 10 days after the removal of the cast he could return to work – after letters from the doctor and signing papers to ensure he won’t sue us if anything goes wrong!
The chimps are as naughty as usual. They have taken to climbing on to the roof at every opportunity. Even Gari, the smallest has managed it now! Shege is becoming naughty, creating whatever mischief she can! It seems like she’s a teenager amongst kindergarteners- she’s becoming more adventurous and mature as the days go on – refusing to come down from the trees at dusk, preparing her nest for the evening (which is lovely to see!) But once we move to Lwiro she will be able to be with older chimps and reach more of her potential.
And Etaito lived up to his reputation of being the spawn of Satan last week- He’s as gorgeous as the rest but there’s definitely a little bit of devil in him! One thing we can count on with our gate guards here, is that they will never be without their bible… Our newest member of staff was inside signing his contract, when Etaito managed to enter the house. As soon as he was in, he knew exactly what he wanted- ran straight up to the table and ran off with the bible! Strange eh!
Gari aka hero and loverboy, our youngest chimp has to be the toughest of the lot. With his little pot belly and gormless looks, he is definitely a Buddha in disguise. Prone to landing on nothing but his head, he must have knocked all sense out of there by now- but he picks himself up without so much of a by or leave, not even noticing the gash on top of his little head! A hero if I ever saw one. And even though he’s the youngest, he seems to know what he’s doing! When either me or Nicole are in the garden, after trying to make love to our wellies, he then proceeds to unzip our clothes and make his way inside, giving love bites all the way! I think he’ll be a heartbreaker when he gets to Lwiro and meets all the other chimps!
And Kanabiro, Principessa the dainty princess who seems to have a crazy 5 minutes once a day, acting as wild as the others unlike most of the time, being the softest and gentlest of the bunch. Only the constantly dirty bum could contradict the princess in her!
Yongesa, the tomboy, definitely makes a match for the males. She changes within a matter of seconds from a peaceful, solemn chimpanzee to a crazy daredevil, jumping from heights that the rest are to scared to attempt!

Frust+Aergernote:Debby kommt vielleicht oder vielleicht nicht;
der Kuehlschrank geht nicht, Musa muss
noch mal kommen, vielleicht am Freitag; die
Toilettenspuelung ist kaputt, vielleicht fuer
immer und wir betrinken uns heute –
vielleicht...

Gottes Werk und Teufels Sohn...

Kleine Einlage von unserem Satansbraten Etaito:
Waehrend ich den Vertrag und allen Papierkram mit unserem neuen Gateguard durchgehe und versuche, moeglichst freundlich und professionell zu erscheinen, seh’ ich aus dem Augenwinkel, dass Etaito mal wieder in die `NO-GO-Zone` (Vorgarten) eingedrungen ist und mit einem Buch unter der Achsel durch den Garten tobt (ich denk nur suess, Mama spielt Buero, Kind will mitspielen)- ich also weiter Managergetue, Etaito nun demonstrativ (die Unterlippe nach aussen gestuelpt) vor der Gittertuer, Seiten fuer Seite genussvoll zerfleddernd - Gateguard etwas nervoes und blass- ach don’t worry maybe it’s an old book the caregivers gave him to play with...
- aeh no Madam it’s my bible... ups- sorry!

Ja, Januar, da war doch was?!

ThanX guys it was great fun!!!

Liz's belated news

Hello all,I am sorry there has been no news from me for a while, but I have a brilliant excuse! I went away for a month's holiday, left the DRC in the capable hands of Tess and Nicole. I have a blood disorder call Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, TTP, very rare, very scary. I had a relapse just before I had to return to DRC. The condition causes platelets to become sticky and bunch together and then chop up red blood cells - you may recall my previous entry 'Grapefruit wars', the big bruise was due to me not having so many free platelets left in my blood, not that Nicole didn't throw real hard either! So all the debris in the blood stream got stuck in the small capillaries in my brain and my nephrons (little tubes in the kidneys) and I started seizuring because there was not enough oxygen getting to my brain. My whole body was numb and I tried to call my dad and I thought it was my time, but my dad came and then I swam in and out of consciousness. My dad said I kept pulling catheters out and screaming at nurses until they strapped me down to the bed. I can't remember any of this, except for the lumbar punch which is quite clear as it was \****!! painful! I was unconscious for about a week and had to have plasma transfers each day for a week until my platelet count came up. I came around on about the 4th October because I was supposed to be on a plane back to DRC! I told the nurses to get hold of my dad and instruct him to change my flight dates! So my brain was pretty fried and my short term memory was affected. I still have kidney pain and weird brain moments, but the headaches are all but gone and my blood tests look OK. Every time my brain starts going wierd, I have an anxiety attack coz I think I am going to seizure again. I swear I have been severely traumatised, but it is not my time to die.... so we carry on. I have to seriously think about getting a paid job, especially with this condition, can't be a volunteer all my life. I have been doing work here in South Africa with an animal welfare organisation called CLAW - community led animal welfare. They do all the vet stuff for dogs and cats from Soweto. I have been training their staff on basic veterinary things. I also get expired drugs from Onderstepoort and take it to them. So, Nicole and Tess will be carrying on the info about the chimps in DRC and hopefully, I will have some news on other welfare work that me and AWARE will be involved in. Watch this space!!Luv liz
