Tess: Crow or chimp?

Our daily morning wake up call is the screaming of the chimps as they await they’re milk at 6am. Just in case we go back to sleep, we have another wake up call- the hammering on the tin roof, deafening everyone in the house. Once Shege ventured on to the roof and the others realised how much fun it could be, one by one, they all found they’re own way up to the top, either up the drain pipe, up the window, climbing the wire…. Gari, being the smallest took a little bit longer but once he’d sussed it you can’t keep him down! We know when the chimps go into the garden in the morning- the first thing Shege does it run round the back and climb on the roof. And after a sleep in at the weekend- Gari realised that there are people behind the window in my room at the top of the house, and has proceeded to come to say hello every morning and destroy the mosquito nets- another thing that need fixing! It seemed like the chimps were all going a bit crazy- being on the roof for a lot longer than usual- as I was about to go outside and tell the guys to get them down- I realised it was the crows on the roof - as small as they are they make just as much noise as Shege!
Nothing will deter them from they’re prohibited ventures up to the forbidden roof tops. Despite one occurrence of being chased off the roof, sliding into the gutter, pulling the whole thing down and falling to the ground clinging on to the metal piping receiving several deep cuts from the gutter- Shege has still not been deterred from climbing up! She came to the ground with a crash, stood swiftly up, came over to me sticking her hand out showing me her wound and expecting me to heal it. 10 minutes later she was back on the roof!

Shege’s mischievousness doesn’t stop there. As she’s getting older, she doesn’t like to go inside at night, and will stay in the trees until as long as possible. Not realising She was still in the garden, I begin to transfer the food for the next few days into the food room. Shege has realised this happens occasionally, and was straight in the food room and took off with 4 bananas a mango and an aubergine. A mistake we wouldn’t make again- well maybe once more! But not again! After being unable to steal anymore food from the food room, she found something new to steal. The caregivers prepare milk for the chimps 3 times a day, using powder milk. One of the caregivers, unawares lost a whole tin 400g of Nido to Shege who climbed the highest tree to cover here self in powder and get some calcium. And it wasn’t the only time! Shege managed to steal the tin for a second time- but this time Balume was working so he followed her up the tree and managed to retrieve at least some of the milk!
It seems like Shege has been having some adventures. Since JJ has arrived she has been thoroughly entertained, with all his energy he is definitely a match for Shege. You would think with all her rough fighting and playing she would be too tired to do mischief, but maybe it’s had the opposite effect!
Etaito and Gari have realised they can occasionally get in the house- Etaito tries most often, but thankfully the doors are locked most of the time. Sometimes the gate is not locked, and if the chimps are on the wrong side the first thing they do is check the gate to the house. Etaito and Gari are not too bad- after they’ve been to the kitchen to search for bananas, run around on the sofas a little, they get a bit confused and are not sure what to do, and are reasonably easy to remove. Thankfully, Shege has not discovered this game- at least only once. Sat on the chair reading a book facing away from the door, Nicole turned her head and said a low long sh#*?§’&t…. I froze and had no idea what was going on but realised the seriousness in Nicole’s expression. Slowly turning my head I saw Shege in the middle of the floor…. Pretty darn scary I can tell you- the havoc she could have caused! Thankfully (again) Balume came to the rescue and before Shege could be accustomed to the new surroundings with so much to destroy, he came in and swiftly told her off and took her out. So far she had not tried again, and will not (fingers crossed!) I think if she gets in a gain she will not be so calm and we might have a bit of a mess to clear up!
And the next chapter of Shege’s story. She has become quiet the little thief in the area…. First she stole a cup of tea through an open window in the front room, then as I was giving her some water, I turned my back for a second- she broke the mosquito net and decided to steal Nicole’s German dictionary! It is in reasonably good condition with only a few teeth marks and one page ripped out! And one morning, looking out of the window to admire the chimps- we saw Shege in the tree tops, Slowly ripping the pages out of an exercise book. We were confused as to where the book came from, after talking to the caregivers, it was established Shege had climbed the wall, ran into next doors garden and stole one of the kids books! 2 hours later she did the same but came back with a trainer! She’s becoming quite an expert it seems!
